Angry that she didn't cook him dinner, a Lutz man threatened to put a steel garden hoe through his wife's head on Thursday afternoon, Hillsborough County deputies say in an arrest report.

Jack Rivers, 53, was intoxicated and confronted his wife with the sharp tool in their kitchen after 4:30 p.m., deputies said.

Her son rushed into the room to protect her, and Rivers swung the tool at him, deputies say. The wife then stepped between them after her son was pushed.

Rivers grabbed her shirt, pulled her toward him and fell facedown on a dog cage, cutting his lip, deputies said.

He then went outside and returned with a rubber mallet, sheriff's spokeswoman Debbie Carter said.

Deputies arrived and he was arrested on two counts each of felony aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and a misdemeanor count of domestic battery. He was taken to Orient Road Jail. As of this morning, bail had not been set.

In January 2006, Rivers was charged with domestic and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. The victim filed for a temporary protective order, and after he participated in an intervention counseling program, prosecutors dropped the charges, court records show.
