SARASOTA COUNTY - When you live to be Sara "Susan" Harrison's age, the first hundred candles get dropped from the birthday cake.

Harrison, who turned 107 years old Thursday, blew out seven candles at a party at Bay Village Retirement Center, where she is the oldest resident and gets her hair and nails done every week.

It was cause for reflection among those who threw the party for Harrison, thought to be the oldest resident in Sarasota County.

"What she's lived through was amazing," Pam Culmone said about the technical innovations since 1900. "No airplanes."

Harrison, once a third-grade teacher in New York, voted in the first presidential election that women were allowed to vote in, said Culmone, whose company helps take care of Harrison.

Her secrets to longevity are prayer and the avoidance of stress. She goes to the doctor every two months and has perfect blood work, Culmone said.

She gets around on her own with the help of a cane. Doctors are surprised at the muscles in her legs.

Harrison moved to Venice in 1970 and into Bay Village in 1984. She has two daughters, six grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
