Pasco County Animal Services and technician Troy Lamson are wrapping up 2007 with high honors.
The Florida Animal Control Association has named the Pasco operation its 2007 Outstanding Agency of the Year and Lamson as the 2007 Animal Caretaker of the Year.
For more than 20 years, the agency formerly known as Pasco County Animal Control has developed programs on pet care, dog bite prevention and rabies awareness. It shelters unwanted, impounded and stray animals, and offers for adoption those that are eligible.
Managed by Denise Hilton, Animal Services also provides:
•Volunteers who teach schoolchildren visiting Safety Town how to avoid getting hurt by animals
•A pet therapy program for domestic violence survivors and a safe place for animals escaping such situations
•An Animal Response Team that distributes emergency preparedness materials to pet owners throughout Pasco
•Investigations of animal cruelty cases
•Special events such as the spay or neuter clinic for cats in June
•Other efforts to alleviate pet overpopulation
•Enforcement of county ordinances
•Placement of humane traps for nuisance dogs
•Loans of humane cat traps
•24-hour emergency service every day of the week
Animal Services was honored in 2005 with the National Humane Education Achievement Award and, in a salute to volunteer contributions, with a 2007 Acts of Caring Award from the National Association of Counties.
Lamson, meanwhile, came to the agency in January 1995 as an animal control officer. Later that year, he transferred to the Land O' Lakes shelter, at 19640 Lake Patience Road, as an animal care technician I. In 1997 he was promoted to animal care technician II.
"Troy has an outstanding work ethic and always goes out of his way to assist others," a proclamation from county commissioners stated.
Lamson also has maintained perfect attendance since 2002.
