ST. PETERSBURG - Two men barely escaped with their lives Thursday night when someone tossed an incendiary device into the back seat of the car they were in, St. Petersburg police say.
Kenneth Morris, 20, and Alfreddie Jones, 19, both of St. Petersburg, were in a 2000 Oldsmobile Alero that had stopped at 37th Avenue South and Ninth Street, police spokesman George Kajtsa said.
At 8:05 p.m. a dark-colored car pulled alongside the Alero and one of the other car's three occupants tossed a smoking paper bag into the back seat of the Alero, Kajtsa said. Morris and Jones were in the front seat, he said.
Jones and Morris bolted out of the Alero, which soon was engulfed in flames, Kajtsa said. They were treated by paramedics for smoke inhalation but otherwise were not injured.
Jones and Morris did not cooperate with the investigation, Kajtsa said. There are no suspects in the incident, which has been labeled arson, he said.
