Strike A Pose

Breath work weaved into stretching and meditation makes yoga the perfect preparation for childbirth. Stretching and strengthening muscles prepares the body for the hard work of labor. Yoga offers a wonderful way for moms-to-be to connect with their unborn child.

"Your body is changing so rapidly, and yoga can help you change more gracefully. It can help you be more present with your breath, body and growing baby," says Lisa Wilson, instructor at Yogani Studios in South Tampa. "Your intuition is stronger during pregnancy than at any other time in your life. Be guided by your comfort while practicing."

CeCe Coppins, 40, is expecting her first baby Jan. 12. Here she uses a pillow and two yoga blocks to modify this pose.

ANJANEYASANA (CRESCENT MOON POSE)

1. Place two blocks on either side of your mat. Kneel with your left knee resting on a pillow. Step out with your right leg so the knee is bent about 90 degrees.

2. Lunge forward with the right leg, placing your hands on the blocks for support. Your left leg will be nearly straight.

3. Sit back on your left leg, straightening your right. Keep the right heel planted on the mat with your toes toward the sky. Slowly bend forward, bringing your chest toward your right leg. Keep your arms straight.
