TAMPA - A Playboy model says Temple Terrace police have affected her work by giving her scrapes and bruises during a recent arrest.
Rebecca Reyes
Both the model, Rebecca Reyes, 21, and police used the phrase "uncalled for" when describing the traffic stop Sunday that escalated into Reyes being charged with obstructing an officer without violence.
Reyes, who appeared in July's issue of Playboy and models under the name Reby Sky, wasn't sure Friday what action she wants to take but said she will discuss her options next week with a lawyer. She is scheduled to appear in another Playboy issue next year and also has modeled in Esquire, GQ and Stuff magazine, she said.
"I have a big ugly scrape that needs to be airbrushed," she said in a phone interview Friday. "I can't even move my arm all the way."
Reyes was released Monday from a Hillsborough County jail on $500 bail.
Police approached Reyes shortly before 8 p.m. Sunday in the parking lot of her apartment complex in Temple Terrace because the taillights on her pickup were not working, police spokesman Mike Dunn said.
At the time, Reyes said, she was parked in her regular space and had Christmas presents for her boyfriend in the truck bed. As she waited for the officer writing the $75 citation, she got out of the truck to stow the gifts inside the cab in case her boyfriend came outside because of the police car, she said.
The officer ordered her to remain in the truck, which is when the trouble began.
Reyes said she told him she needed to get her bag.
"I didn't know it was a big deal and that I wasn't supposed to get out," she said Friday.
Dunn said Reyes walked around the truck "agitated" and ignored the officer's requests about four times. Another officer arrived.
When Reyes walked to the passenger side of the truck, the officers "got a little concerned because you don't know what she's doing," Dunn said.
They decided to arrest her. "She started getting more and more belligerent, cursing up a storm. ... 'Get your hands off me,' that sort of thing," he said.
Reyes said she began "freaking out" when she saw the other officer arrive, with his hand on his belt. "I understand there's police protocol," she said, but "do there really need to be two grown men walking toward me?"
Reyes, who weighs 105 pounds and is 5 feet 5 inches tall, couldn't understand how the officers perceived her as dangerous.
"I could understand if I was threatening, making sudden movements," she said. "My brother's a lieutenant colonel in the Army. Two of my cousins are police officers. I wouldn't attack a police officer. I'm not stupid."
She said the officers pushed her to the ground, cuffed her hands behind her back and "hyper-extended" her arms as they pulled her to her feet. Reyes, who was wearing a dress, said she has scrapes on her right shoulder and knees, bruises on her legs and a scrape on her eyebrow.
Her boyfriend, who is an engineer and a photographer, is livid, as are her parents, she said. "My mother is crying," she said. "It was uncalled for."
Dunn said the officers were mindful of her petite size and tried not to be rough with her.
"It was so uncalled for," he said. "If she had just taken the ticket and sat in her truck, it would have been over in 10 minutes."

OKAY! I have to say that she got what she deserved. When a police officer tell you something you NEED to do it. I guarantee if a cop tells me to stay in the car, I WILL stay in the car! You should not argue the point with an armed person, lol. There used to be respect for the police.........now, it seems like there's no respect for anyone anymore.

To read this, you would think it was never before police policy to arrest non-compliant suspects before her. I admit Temple Terrace isn't East Tampa or Suitcase city, but I guarantee you that non-compliant suspects are brought down in scuffles all the time. Why does she and her family believe she should be treated any different?
It's never good for a driver or police when a situation as routine as a traffic stop escalates. But at the same time I can't believe she thinks it's perfectly normal to disregard police directions during a reasonable traffic stop. There's something wrong there. Sure, you might get out and *start* doing something innocuous during a traffic stop, but when you're told to stop doing it - for whatever reason - you stop doing it. I suppose you might be "right" to stick up for your perceived infringed rights or something, but you might wind up right and shot too. She claims "she isn't stupid", but if she can't guess that she can't just do whatever she wants during a traffic stop, or that police can't somehow telepathically comprehend her range and potential for violence, then, sorry, stupid is actually a pretty fitting word.
At least now she'll know it IS a big deal in some circumstances to start going through bags and ignoring officer concerns, but it's a shame it took this to drive home the lesson.
-Dave

Too bad it wasn't one of Sheriff Gee's deputies. She would have NOT been charged. If you are a young female in Hillsb. county you can break the law, lie about it, falsly accuse anyone, waste our tax dollars and noooooo problem. You are excused with no accountability for your actions. We should thank the Temple Terrace police for doing their jobs correctly. Being six ft. and 210 lbs. I would expect to be tasered and very forcefully dealt with if I did not follow orders from the police. When the cops give an order then why is it okay for females not to be held accountable from the sheriff here in Hillsborough?

The 2 kinds of calls that are most dangerous for law enforcement are domestic calls and traffic stops. A 105 pound woman has more than enough strength to pull a trigger. The officers followed procedure. If it were your brother pulling her over would you want him to not take every precaution for his safety??

Way back in the 50's there were two sets of standards one for black and one for white. Now it appears that some idiots are asking for two sets of standards one for pretty and one for ugly. Oh give me a break. It doesn't matter if she is petit and pretty. She still has to listen to what an officer tells her. She said she is not stupid. Well her actions tell otherwise. But either way her charges will be dropped in court so what's the big deal. She has a scrape that now has to be air brushed. I wish this was my only problem. She posses nude for pictures. It doesn't matter if it is playboy or the strip club down the street. Most strippers use drugs (not all) but most do. I am glad to see that the Temple Terrace police did their jobs and I would expect to be treated the same way if it were me.

as she states, she comes from a police family so you'd think that she'd have more respect for a person in uniform. She got what she deserved. Bottom line is you do what you are told to do at the scene and if you feel there was something done wrong then deal with it in the courtroom. I bet this isnt the first time she's had bruised knees either LOL.....what a moron

Of course, if she left her clothes on, that would hide the bruises as well. There are two sides to this story - from her perspective, I'm sure she had no idea her brake lights weren't working (/sarcasm), and the police officers were certainly scared that she might pull a gun on them and mow them down (/sarcasm). I think the writer actually hit this one on the head. She should have complied - the police were too rough. As both sides said - "uncalled for." BTW - isn't it amazing what a little makeup and some airbrushing can do?

I suspect (I wasn't there, of course) that the groundwork was laid for this confrontation in the form of poor communication between the lady and the LEOs before the incident escalated. What the lady doesn't understand is that traffic stops offer a significant amount of hazard to LEOs. While I was surprised to read that she was "stopped in her parking lot", I suspect that she was "noticed" on a public street.
While I can't comment on the fact -- or the way she was taken down, I can say that one of the best ways to deal with LEOs is to do everything you can to make them comfortable in dealing with you --- windows open, lights on, hands where they can always be seen; ask permission to more your hands to another location (like to get your wallet), etc. I've gotten lots of appreciation for things like that (and probably out of a few potential tickets!!) For someone who has family members who are LEOs, I'm surprised she doesn't understand that simple fact.

As a veteran, I understand the need to shut up and follow orders. I think most civilians do not. The police need to exercise a little restraint themselves. Military tactics used on a decidedly non military population seems like a receipe for something bad to me. Hopefully the department will deal with this internally and lighten things up. (For God's sake don't let the lawyers get involved.) Can it be so bad that every traffic ticket is now a life and death situation? Have we all gone nuts? Anyway, I salute those who do a tough job. You're in my prayers.

Typical Cops. Arrogant. Some are really cool, but some get testy for no reason. Follow my commands because I say so. I bet she got in his grill a bit, but as a cop, you have got to be above that. Bzzzzzt! Wrong answer, Skankosaurus! Yes, yes you are stupid. Very, very stupid. Let me ask you this: How do the cops know that you're not a threat? They repeatedly ask you to get back in the vehicle, and you ignore them, then get confrontational. Rule #1: When a cop asks you to do something, you do it.
Because you're 100 pounds means that you can't be carrying a weapon? A gun? For all they know, you could have been coked out.
You got what you deserved.

keyelime, how were they to know she was no threat? Typically when people do not follow the orders of a LEO, its because they have something to hide or they are intoxicated, either way, it could lead to something bad. It is follow the LEO's commands because they law of the state of Florida says that you must. It is meant to protect the suspect, general public, and the police officer.
It is pretty standard procedure to have more than one officer at a traffic stop, because of the unknown danger factor.
Resisting arrest without violence means that she did not strike the officer. She was probably attempting to pull away once they decided to arrest her for not complying. The question in the LEO's mind, why is she pulling away? What does she want to go for, what does she want to get?
Imagine what it is like going to a job where you know you have the chance to get killed or seriously injured everyday you are on shift. It just may help put things in prospective, sevenoaksman.

Here are a couple of facts:
1. The state of FL has one of the highest line of duty deaths in the nation. Most from "simple traffic" stops.
2. Who you are, or think you are has nothing to do with how you should be treated by the police or any other law inforcement official.
Now for the opion:
Trust everyone (alomost everyone) who has responded, you are nothing special, got what you deserve. So stop acting like you are "somebody". Deal with it. All I can think is you are very lucky they didn't think you were reaching for something that might or might not be a weapon. You should be greatful you didn't get shot or at the least tazed. Going to the media crying boo hoo. Shame on you and the media!

I am female-5'2" 120 lbs, not much of a threat if I was to have a fight with someone, but if you put a gun in my hand I am able to KILL anyone. When she was asked repeatedly by the police officers to get back in her truck that is exactly what she should have done THE FIRST TIME they asked. They were being nice asking her a time or two after that. What if she was drugged out and reaching for a gun? ANYONE can be a threat to the life of a police officer regardless of size. I have been pulled over only once in my life, and that was when I was 18 for a speeding ticket. I had no knowledge of how to react to a police officer when stopped. But I used common sense-I know cops are worried about getting shot during a traffic stop, so I shut off my car, put the keys on the dashboard, and kept my hands on the steering wheel. When he asked me for my license and registration I told him it was in the glove compartment and I asked him if it was ok to reach over, open it and get it. After him reviewing all of my information he did indeed give me the ticket (which I deserved, I was after all speeding, it was 10 miles over the limit)but he thanked me for taking the time to make every effort to put him at ease. I respect the police, and I am thankful that we have them. They tell you to do something, then do it period. OR if it is something that makes you nervous, tell the cop you are calling 911 that you want a supervisor there, and you are not getting out of the car until they arrive it's simple. She was way out of line and I hope she doesn't get a dime, and has charges brought against her. Police put their lives on the line EVERY shift that they work, and they are thankful to make it home to their families every night. Those of you that bash the cops will be the first one calling them when YOU need help. THANK you to police officers everywhere, you are appreciated.

Gosh, "Reby Sky," judging by the comments for this story, your appeal for sympathy to the Court of Public Opinion is failing miserably. According to the article, you are going to discuss your "options" with your attorney. Presumably, this means you have in mind a possible lawsuit against those Big Bad Police officers who SO unjustly roughed you up when you refused to obey their orders during a stop. Well, Sugar Lumps, take another look at the comments to this site. Herein is your jury pool should you decide to sue. Oh, and Sweet Cheeks, ya momma SHOULD be crying because she raised an idiot.

I'm appalled by the lies coming from the spokesperson for the Temple Terrace police department. Instead of owning upto the wrongdoings of the arresting officers, he is lying about what happened. Not once did I move from my spot right outside my truck once the first officer told me to get back inside. Not ONCE did I even so much as TOUCH a police officer; By the time I would have had the chance to react, my face was in the pavement of my own parking lot. I'd also like to point out that my charge was Obstructing or opposing a police officer WITHOUT VIOLENCE. No account of any sort of "pushing" or violence was written in the official police report, which was written by the very officer who arrested me. Once the dashboard video camera footage is available, I won't even need to speak about this ever again - The proof of what really happened will all be there.
I never wanted a "he said, she said" media war - All I wanted to do was bring awareness to cops abusing their power, which is ruining our society and OBVIOUSLY a big problem. NOTHING about the cops' behavior was justifiable in any way, especially not by the lies coming from the spokesperson for the Temple Terrace police department.
I am ashamed to be part of a community that condones such brutal and inappropriate behavior.

Hey Rebecca, All you really wanted to do was have some more free publicity. Don't forget you were able to get some free pub with another article about "Not telling Momma" when you got nude for Playboy. What, you think people can't use Google to see you just trying to get your name out there. People know who you are and what you are. Go back to the Mons Venus, stop being a mouthy little brat and accept the fact that you are not the one anybody will believe. Talk to a lawyer, I’ll bet it ends up being one of those bottom dwellers that work with Ask Gary. Were you SCARED & CONFUSED?

What is the motivation for the TTPD to lie? Negative press coverage?
Please, if you had done the right thing in the first place, there would be no issue. You didn't, and that's why you you're in this mess, take some personal responsibility.

If law enforcement treated people with respect and in a professional manner, things like this wouldn't happen. After all, it starts with a simple traffic violation which gets blown completely out of proportion. Abuse of power - own it, officer.

Reyes, who weighs 105 pounds and is 5 feet 5 inches tall, couldn't understand how the officers perceived her as dangerous?. Perhaps she was never in the Viet Nam War. Whereas a small child, looking so cute, lifts up their shirt, and in their hand under it, is a hand gernade with pin pulled, and it goes BOOM. Or a hand gun shoots you in the head. Has not these liberal's learned yet, that we are at war with terrorist's World Wide, and NO ONE should be trusted, even when they are breaking the law, speak English, is a Playboy model and a perv for money, to support her drug habbit perhaps, and act's like a Paris Hilton and Britney wannabe that's also charged with obstructing an officer with or without violence, because she's loaded and don't care about fine's or ticket's either. What was she on anyway ?. A ego pill ?.

As i recall TT used to not be the most professional unit in Hillsborough. Hope that is not true anymore. Also, most dont give a ticket but a different warning to get it fixed and if you show to the city or county that you have had it fixed there is no charge unless things have changed. Yes DO NOT SPEED AT ALL IN TT.

I'm only 40 but I grew up a lot different than kids these days. Show some respect and don't think the world owes you anything! She should have obeyed the law. Poor Baby! Rules are for everyone!

How can a radio tell a Police Officer if a 105lb girl just happens to have an AK-47?
It is a matter of life and death for police offciers to err on the side of caution and to follow protocol.

If police want respect they also need to show respect, especially to us law abiding, tax paying citizens. I have been treated very rudely by a TT cop even though I had broken no laws and only wanted to ask a question. I have also encountered some of the nicest and most professional officers on the TT force. There are certainly 3 sides to this story as there are with most, he said, she said and the truth. I certainly hope the TT police did the right thing this time.

JAKEKOREA is EXACTLY correct about more than just FL officers, you other people are a bunch of Liberal morons. I know cops and I've seen them get completely drunk & drive home, steal confiscated drugs, join in illegal activity, the list goes on. Many officers are honest & have integrity, but many do not. They're job is to SERVE the PUBLIC as a whole, and trampling our Constitutional Rights is NOT in they're perceived authority! Further, if you are stupid enough to report them, LOOK OUT!, they will get all their ignorant cop buddies so far up your A%% you'll need a lifetime supply of PrepH.

FWI! It has been my expirience when being pulled over for a traffic violation or check point is to do as follows. 1. Turn on the interior light (if dark). 2. Lower window. 3.Put hands on steering wheel at 2 & 10. 4. Answer directly. I have always found this to be a good practice and believe me I am well practiced. These men and women have difficult enough jobs inforcing the law with out some making an uncertain and stressful situation more of both. Show them some respect and compation for the dangerous job they face daily. If you tick like a time bomb when they aproach don't be surprised when they go all bomb squad on you.

Temple Terrace cops are the bottom of the food chain. When you can't get a job with HCSO, Tampa PD, or even Plant City PD, Temple Terrace will give you a gun and TWO nightsticks.
They are buttheads generally. I don't go anywhere in Temple Terrace because of them. If you have a business in Temple Terrace, then you are loosing a lot money due to the wild west mentality of your police force.
It's not about enforcing the law. It's about revenue enhancement and keeping the iron fist wrapped tightly around the Kingdom of TT.
