Dade City's Shide Sharrell Hill, 18, a Pasco High School senior, was crowned Miss Kwanzaa 2007 during a pageant held Thursday night at the American Legion Hall on Church Street.
The Miss Kwanzaa pageant is sponsored by the African American Heritage Society of East Pasco County.
Runners-up were Janaysha Brown, 15, of Dade City; Sha'Vante Lanaye Bennett, 14, of Brooksville; and Shantia Brown, 16, of Dade City.
The Kwanzaa celebration sponsored by the African American Heritage Society of East Pasco County continues through Tuesday.
Kwanzaa is a seven-day holiday emphasizing African heritage and reaffirming core values, known as the Seven Principles: Umoja, or unity; Kujichagulia, self-determination; Ujima, collective work and responsibility; Ujamaa, cooperative economics; Nia, purpose; Kuumba, creativity; and Imani, faith.
The celebration schedule:
Today: Festival, 2 to 4 p.m., Naomi Jones Park, 38122 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., Dade City.
•Business panel: 7 p.m., New Bethel AME Church, 20653 Floyd Road, Lacoochee. Local entrepreneurs will discuss steps to starting a business.
Sunday: Feast and baking contest, 3 p.m., St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church, 1458 Seventh St., Dade City. Bring a covered dish to the free event.
Monday: Talent extravaganza, 3 p.m., American Legion Hall, 37745 Church Ave., Dade City. The event is free.
Tuesday: People are asked to observe a quiet day of reflection.
