READABILITY: The dim, dishwater-gray screen can be difficult to read except in the best light. The screen makes an annoying "flash" when moving from one page to the next. A uniform typeface is used for all text. Slow keyboard display.

QUALITIES: Device feels flimsy. Badly designed page-turning buttons on the sides are extremely sensitive, leading to undesired flipping ahead or backward. Scroll bar is difficult to use. Keyboard buttons are unspeakably tiny. Unit doesn't fit comfortably in its suede carrying case.

SELECTION: About 90,000 books are instantly available on Amazon.com. It can be purchased without a computer, using a wireless connection through Whispernet technology.

SEARCH: It allows you to bookmark a passage. Search function calls up any word. Gives you the ability to make annotations in the margins, look up words in the dictionary and access the dubious Wikipedia.

STORAGE: It stores up to 200 books, magazines or newspapers, plus hundreds more with an optional memory card.

BATTERY: Lasts up to one week.

PRICE: $399, plus cost of downloaded books. New titles average $10 each, classics about $2.
