Now that "Hannah Montana" star Miley Cyrus has signed on to "Dick Clark's Rockin' New Year's Eve 2008," the competition might as well pack it in for the night.

The ABC special that begins at 10 tonight already has an edge because Clark has become synonymous with New Year's Eve, even though he will be making only a token appearance.

Sidelined by a stroke in 2004, the 79-year-old Clark will be there for the ball drop in Times Square, but most of the hosting chores fall on Ryan Seacrest of "American Idol" fame.

Having 15-year-old Cyrus live in Times Square gives Clark's show an extra boost. The singing sensation is coming off a sold-out concert tour, and her "Hannah Montana" soundtrack has gone triple platinum,

But that's not all. "Rockin' New Year's Eve" covers all the musical bases with fourth season "American Idol" winner Carrie Underwood and Black Eyed Peas' cutie Fergie.

Other musical acts: OneRepublic, Akon, Natasha Bedingfield, Sean Kingston, Plain White T's, Taylor Swift and Will.i.am.

HEROIC ACTION: NBC hopes to scare up some action with "Heroes" star Hayden Panettiere and Carson Daly in Times Square and Tommy Lee, Dave Navarro and OK Go in Las Vegas.

Beginning at 11:30 tonight, "NBC's New Year's Eve With Carson Daly" will be simulcast on MSNBC, CNBC and Bravo. The rock band Panic! at the Disco will perform two songs from its platinum-selling album, "A Fever You Can't Sweat Out." During the evening, Panettiere will join Daly and give viewers a sneak peek about what to expect from her hit show in 2008.

SPARKS FLY: Fox's "New Year's Eve Live" show at 11 will feature current "American Idol" winner Jordin Sparks along with runner-up Blake Lewis.

Also performing in Times Square tonight are the pop-punk band Fall Out Boy and "So You Think You Can Dance" winner Sabra Johnson and finalists Dominic Sandoval and Hok Konishi.

Cat Deeley returns as the show's host, and Fox talk show host Spike Feresten will offer his year-end commentary.

Fox will appeal to the sports fans with previews of the New Year's Day bowl games, including the Sugar Bowl, Orange Bowl, Cotton Bowl and Fiesta Bowl.

ODDS & ENDS: CBS will ring in the new year with a rerun of David Letterman's "Late Show"; BET's "New Year's Eve Party" will bring 2008 in with rap and hip-hop beginning at 11 p.m.; ESPN's "New Year, No Limits: From Las Vegas," at 11 p.m., will feature daredevil Robbie Madison's attempt to jump the length of a football field on a motorcycle.

Fox Sports Channel offers "Best Damn Dream Girl Special" at 11 p.m., a profile of the women vying to be named the Hooters Dream Girl. The Travel Channel offers live global coverage of New Year's celebrations around the world beginning at 11 p.m.

Fox News Channel and CNN both plan live New Year's Eve parties from Times Square. On "U Party With Fox News 2008" (11 p.m.), Megyn Kelly hosts coverage that includes viewers' resolutions and videos from home parties as well as viewers' picks for the top stories of 2007.

On CNN, "New Year's Eve Live With Anderson Cooper," at 11 p.m., will feature the news anchor in Times Square as well as correspondents reporting from celebrations across the country and around the world.

Joining Cooper in Times Square will be "American Morning" anchor Kiran Chetry and Headline News anchor Erica Hill. CNN correspondent Gary Tuchman will report live from New York City's Central Park for the annual Midnight Run. Correspondent Sean Callebs will report from New Orleans, while correspondent Kareen Wynter will be in Las Vegas.

The program will feature musical performances from Earth, Wind & Fire in Las Vegas and Miranda Lambert and Widespread Panic, both in Atlanta. Also joining Cooper throughout the night will be comedian Kathy Griffin.
