ST. PETERSBURG - The attorney representing Steve Swindal, the former general partner for the New York Yankees, this afternoon entered a plea of no contest on his behalf to charges that he was driving drunk on the streets of St. Petersburg in February.

Swindal's driver's license was suspended for six months, and he was put on probation for a year, as is customary with first-time DUI offenders.

Swindal was not required to be in court, and he wasn't.

Anyone who is charged with drunken driving for a first time – and is traveling or lives out of town – is not required to make an appearance in court, said Kym B. Rivellini, Swindal's attorney.

In addition to the license suspension and probation, Swindal was ordered to pay $75 in investigative costs and a $645.50 fine, his plea agreement shows. He also was ordered to perform 50 hours of community service and attend DUI school.

Swindal was arrested in the early morning hours Feb. 15 by St. Petersburg police. He was driving on Central Avenue and made a left turn on 31st Street South, nearly hitting a police cruiser traveling in the opposite direction, police said at the time.

Officer Terri Nagle followed Swindal and noticed his car weaving, police said. Nagle clocked him driving 61 mph in a 35 mph speed zone. The officer followed Swindal 18 blocks before stopping him.

Police said Swindal refused to take breath test and failed a field sobriety test.

Swindal is the former son-in-law of Yankees owner George Steinbrenner.

An earlier version of this story gave incorrect information about Swindal's job title and marital status.
