SRI-St. Petersburg may be the new kid on Florida's research scene, but by landing a $36.5 million Navy contract, it has quickly established itself as a major player in marine science research.
U.S. Rep. Bill Young deserves credit for helping SRI win this sizable grant, which will fund the most advanced port-security measures in the world. Working with partners at the University of South Florida, the firm plans to build underwater 'sensing and situation awareness technologies' capable of detecting a variety of hazards. It will make Tampa Bay a living laboratory for detection tools that can better protect shipping channels and ports.
St. Petersburg College's National Terrorism Preparedness Institute and USF's College of Marine Science will work as subcontractors on the initiative, along with four other area companies.
SRI -St. Petersburg scored a sizable win with this contract, but the ultimate prize will come from knowing our ports are as safe as possible.
