NEW PORT RICHEY - An unidentified man was struck and killed Wednesday trying to cross a heavily congested section of U.S. 19, New Port Richey police said.
The man, in his late 40s or early 50s, was attempting to cross the highway near Bellview Avenue from the western side at about 11:20 a.m. when he was struck by a motorist in the northbound lane, according to police spokesman Assistant Chief Darryl Garman.
The man was pronounced dead on the scene by paramedics, Garman said. The driver of the Pontiac Bonneville was taken to a local hospital and treated for minor injuries.
Garman said an autopsy was being conducted to identify the man.
'We have not determined his identity yet,' Garman said. 'It could take a couple days.'
Snarled traffic was rerouted though surrounding neighborhoods while police officials conducted the investigation. A section of the highway was closed down for an hour.
No other details were available.
