TAMPA - Police say they charged two teenagers with reckless driving causing serious injury on Wednesday after a road race on a two-lane street ended in a collision.
Alejando Casillo, 18, and Ernesto Medina-Leon, 17, both of Tampa, were racing a 1993 Honda Civic and a 1997 Mitsubishi Eclipse south on North Trask Street when the crash occurred, Tampa police said.
About 5:40 p.m., both cars entered the intersection at West Ohio Avenue, failed to stop at a stop sign and smashed into a 1992 Dodge pickup, police said.
Three people suffered minor injuries, police said, and one passenger in the racing cars, Alain Raul Gambe-Coto, 17, of Tampa, had life-threatening injuries, police said.
Rescue personnel transported Gambe-Coto to St. Joseph's Hospital, police said. His condition was not immediately available.
