Russo Leading Way For Mitchell

Published: November 3, 2007

HUDSON - Mitchell High forward Marisa Russo was just going about her business Wednesday night.

The sophomore forward scored two first-half goals as Mitchell's girls soccer team downed host Hudson 4-0.

It was the Mustangs' (3-1, 1-0) first Sunshine Athletic Conference match, and Russo now has six goals. She had 22 goals to lead the Mustangs last year.

"It was a nice throw-in," Russo said of the first goal. "I just ran, and I happened to hit it near post and it went right in, a line drive.

"The second goal, I cut it inside and hit it far post."

Mitchell also had goals scored by Shelby Wright and Jessica Jagielski to take the victory.

"I think we did play well Wednesday," Russo said. "They Hudson are a good team."
Russo scored first, assisted by Wright, 19 minutes into the contest. Russo also scored unassisted from 10 yards out 23 minutes into the match.

Mitchell led 2-0 at the half and dominated the shots on goal 12-3.

Wright scored in the game's 25th minute, and Jagielski added the final goal during the final minute with an assist from Rebekah Stockowski.

Hudson goalkeeper Audrey Collins made nine saves to keep the score close.

"I think for an early season game, they played well," Mustangs coach Karl Kukec said. "They connected the passing. We worked the ball up forward through the midfield. We did pretty well. Hudson gave us a little bit of a problem with their defense. Four goals is not so bad.

"I have many seniors this year, and combined with some of the freshman, we have a good set of kids there. It's kind of a new team concept."

The Hudson coach saw some positive signs but was not pleased with her team's play Wednesday night.

"Not very good," Cobras coach Christine Rizzieri said of the performance. "I think we played a much better second half than first half. It's obviously not the way you want to start. We have a lot of new players in. We graduated our top scorer, Ashley Schuering. We are coming off an ACL injury for our starting sweeper, Stacy Swezy. She is in, but did not start at sweeper.

"Our second-leading scorer, Michelle Lang, started at sweeper for us. Our scoring opportunities were a little bit slim. We will get better."
