BRADENTON After Lakewood running back Bernard Reedy scored a two-yard touchdown to put the visiting Spartans up 20-16 with just over six minutes left in the game, Lakewood decided to put the game away.
Instead, a curious call may have set up Lakewood for a loss.
Following Reedy's touchdown, Lakewood attempted an onside kick and failed with Southeast getting the ball at its own 40. The host Seminoles marched the 60 yards for a touchdown, a 6-yard keeper by quarterback Bruce Kelly around left end with 1:20 remaining to give Southeast a 23-20 win.
On the ensuing possession, Lakewood never got the ball past midfield when time ran out.
"We managed to hang on by tooth and nail," Southeast coach Paul Maechtle said. "I was surprised about Lakewood's onside kick attempt. They've been doing different kind of kicks all the time and they worked for them in the past and worked for them all night so I guess they decided to roll the dice. It almost worked."
The Southeast win and Lakewood loss combined with Northeast's win sets up a three-way tie in Class 4A-9 district for the runner-up slot. The tiebreaker between the three teams will be held at Northeast Monday evening at 7 p.m.

LARGO 17, GIBBS 14: Largo earned its Class 5A-District 10 title the hard way, by stopping Gibbs on its own 3-yard line as the final seconds melted off the clock. Two consecutive running plays by the Gladiators were stopped cold by the Packer defensive line. The Gladiators would not have enough time to reset the ball and try for a game-tying field goal to force overtime.
Brynn Harvey's 60-yard touchdown to open the third quarter proved to be the decisive score for the Packers, who had many offensive gaffes that limited their second half production. Harvey would finish with 205 yards and two touchdowns on 22 carries.
"I told my team that we would face games like this, where a team finds a way to win. We played ugly but won the football game. The defense played hard, they had some good plays," Largo coach Rick Rodriguez said.

NORTHEAST 30, OSCEOLA 14: Northeast handed its school a Seniors Night victory over visiting Osceola to force a three-way Class 4A-District 9 playoff Monday with Bradenton Southeast and Lakewood.

The Warriors answered with Matt Palmer, a defensive back, running back and kicker. First he kicked a 35-yard field goal late in the first quarter. The second quarter saw him boot a 25-yard field goal, score a TD on a 95-yard kickoff return minutes later, and then take the handoff from QB Sean Palmer to run in the two-point conversion.
But Palmer's streak wasn't enough, and Vikings kicker Lukaz Chrzasek connected with a 26-yard field goal at the end of the half to seal what would become his team's victory.
