Jamal R. Turner
A St. Petersburg man who went to a hospital today seeking treatment for a gunshot wound has been charged in connection to the fatal shooting of a man Friday night.
Jamal R. Turner, 30, was charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm. St. Petersburg police say the case will be reviewed by the state attorney's office to determine if murder charges also are warranted.
Clenton McKinney, 60, who lives in an upper apartment at 142 Fifth Avenue North, died from multiple gunshot wounds to his upper body, police said. His brother, Theodore, 56, suffered a gunshot wound to his foot.
About 9:30 p.m. Friday night, officers found Clenton inside the apartment and Theodore injured in the upstairs area of the apartment building.
A police investigation revealed Clenton McKinney had an altercation with another resident of the apartment complex that week. Turner, of 711 Third Avenue South, Apt. 226, had come to his apartment to discuss the altercation.
McKinney and Turner armed themselves with handguns, and multiple shots were fired, a St. Petersburg police release states. Turner was shot in the leg.
Turner was arrested today after going to St. Anthony's Hospital for treatment.
He remains in jail, with bail set at $20,000.
Turner has no prior arrests in Florida, but was convicted of burglary in 1995 in Georgia, records show. He also was convicted in 1998 in Georgia of being a felon in possession of a firearm.
Two small caliber handguns were recovered during the investigation, police say.
