CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Florida State needed a big-time win to regain some respectability, while No. 2-ranked Boston College needed a victory to keep its national title hopes intact. FSU got what it needed Saturday night, knocking off the undefeated Eagles, 27-17.
The roller-coaster Noles, who blew late leads against Wake Forest and Miami, were able to hold on against Boston College and Heisman candidate Matt Ryan. The victory was FSU's first against a team ranked in the top-five since defeating No. 5 Virginia Tech in the inaugural ACC Championship Game in 2005.
And much like in that game, FSU quarterback Drew Weatherford came through in the clutch, hitting De'Cody Fagg for a 42-yard touchdown pass midway through the fourth quarter for the deciding score.
Weatherford passed for more than 300 yards for the second consecutive game since regaining the starting job. Boston College rallied after Weatherford's pass to Fagg put FSU up 20-10 with 8:11 left in the game.
On Boston College's ensuing possession, Ryan hit tight end Ryan Purvis for a touchdown pass to cut FSU's lead to 20-17. After FSU was forced to punt at Boston College's 43, Ryan had a final chance to recreate his late-game heroics of the Virginia Tech game, but his pass to Purvis was intercepted by Geno Hayes and returned 38 yards for a touchdown.
Weatherford looked more like the Heisman candidate Saturday, finishing 29 of 45 for 354 yards and two touchdowns. The loss was Boston College's first at Alumni Stadium since losing to FSU in 2005.
