Talk Heats Up As Newcomer Bennett States His Case

Published: November 4, 2007

Bucs running back Michael Bennett, recently acquired in a trade with Kansas City, did not mind sitting down and answering questions for this week's Wide Right column, but he did lay out one condition.

"As long as you don't ask me if I have ever visited Mons Venus," Bennett said.

Bennett, thou dost protest too much.

Tampa Bay hosts Arizona today, so I spoke with Bennett about the state that is famous for its dry heat, cactuses and Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, who treats inmates like, um, criminals.

Anwar: Have you ever been to Arizona?

Michael: Yeah, it was a great place. It was actually 106 degrees when I went there. I had a lot of fun. I worked out with a few guys out there during the summer. I go to Arizona State University on the track and work out during the offseason.

Anwar: Which is worse - Arizona's dry heat or Florida's humidity?

Michael: Florida's humidity. It just drains you.

Anwar: So which one makes you smell worse?

Michael: Dry heat. You know what, with the humidity you sweat more. Florida heat makes you stink.

Anwar: Do you drink AriZona Iced Tea?

Michael: No. Just water. I may have a Gatorade, but you have to drink water, especially if you're in Arizona.

Anwar: In Arizona, Arpaio requires his prisoners to wear pink underwear. Is that a good or bad look?

Michael: I don't really wear pink, so I can't even comment on it.

Anwar: So what do you think a good prison color is?

Michael: The orange. That is the standard prison color.

Anwar: Could you play against a team that wore all pink?

Michael: No. No. If they brought an all-pink team here, I would think we would be playing a bunch of ladies. Like a women's football league.

Anwar: So you wouldn't play?

Michael: No.

Anwar: Have you ever been to the Grand Canyon?

Michael: No.

Anwar: Ever wanted to go?

Michael: No.

Anwar: Is there anyone you would like to throw into the Grand Canyon?

Michael: No. Actually, yes. The guys I would like to throw in there are those sexual predators who are on that "Dateline: To Catch a Predator" show. I'd like to throw all of them in there.

Anwar: What did you think of former Arizona coach Dennis Green's tirade last year?

Michael: I thought it was great. I had the opportunity to play for Coach Green, and he's a wonderful man and a great leader. A great motivator. A great coach and a great person. I thought it was great.

Anwar: So you enjoyed him going off on the media?

Michael: Oh, yeah.

Anwar: That's cold. Anyway, did you know there used to be a law in Arizona that prohibited donkeys from sleeping in bathtubs?

Michael: Huh?

Anwar: Seriously, there used to be a law in Arizona that prohibited donkeys from sleeping in bathtubs. What do you think of that?

Michael: Why is that?

Anwar: I have no clue. Maybe to make sure people didn't store their donkeys in a bathtub?

Michael: Yeah, that's an off-the-wall question.

Anwar: There also was a law that said it was unlawful to refuse a person your water if they asked for it.

Michael: Wow, I didn't know that, either.

Anwar: Would you share your water?

Michael: I'm not going to drink after anybody else, but if I have water and somebody wants it, or they ask for some, then you can have some, but I don't want it back.

Anwar: This year, the Super Bowl is in Arizona. Will you attend it as a player or fan?

Michael: I want to go as a player. That's my ultimate dream. I've made the Pro Bowl. I don't think I'll make the Hall of Fame, but I still have two of my three goals that I can get. I have one more. I made the Pro Bowl, so I have to play in the Super Bowl. Hopefully it's this year.
