CORAL GABLES - Miami freshman QB Robert Marve is working through some "personal problems" that the university will help him handle, Coach Randy Shannon said Sunday, a day after UM's 19-16 overtime loss to North Carolina State.
The Plant High graduate was charged last week with resisting arrest without violence and minor criminal mischief after he broke the mirror off a car and briefly tried to evade police on foot in the Miami neighborhood of Coconut Grove. Both charges are misdemeanors.
"With Marve, he's really got some personal problems," Shannon said. "We talked about it and at least the kid is being upfront and honest with me about things. ... He's talked to me, I've talked to his parents and we're all on the same page, the parents, the kid and myself."
Marve has not been available for comment since the arrest was announced.
WHAT WENT RIGHT: The Hurricanes rushed for 314 yards on 60 carries as three players had at least 60 yards, led by Javarris James' 103-yard output. Derron Thomas (66 yards), Darnell Jenkins (48) and Jerrell Mabry (34) all posted season-highs in the game.
"It is hard for me and it is hard for this coaching staff to say that we ran the ball 60 times and get 314 yards rushing, that you lose the game," Shannon said.
WHAT WENT WRONG: Quarterback Kirby Freeman completed one of 14 passes with three interceptions. His first five passes were incompletions before finding Jenkins for an 84-yard touchdown. In his last two games, he has completed only five of 25 passes with five interceptions.
"We cannot go 1-for-14 and try to win games," Shannon said. "We've got to get better quarterback play. On Saturday, Kirby was not there."
Shannon did not have another option at quarterback as Kyle Wright was out with a high ankle sprain and the only other options were walk-ons.
INJURY UPDATE: Wright, OL Andrew Bain and DE Eric Moncur did not play, but are hopeful to return this week.
CHALLENGE AHEAD: The Canes need one more victory to become bowl eligible, but it won't be easy as their next three opponents are ranked in the Top 25, beginning with No. 23 Virginia (8-2) in the final game at the Orange Bowl this week before traveling to No. 11 Virginia Tech (7-2) and No. 8 Boston College (8-1).
