TAMPA - Nine-year-old Ariana MacMartin wanted to join the Magic Attic book club. So her mother dialed the phone number shown in the back of the book she got from the New Tampa Regional Library.

But when Patricia MacMartin called, she discovered the number connected her to an adult entertainment phone recording..

"Hey there sexy guy," the message started.

MacMartin called the library to report what had happened.

She said she gave employees more than a month to do something about it, but the books with the adult phone service numbers remained on the shelf.

So MacMartin decided to check out all the books from the Magic Attic series that show the numbers.

"I have eight books in my possession and there's a lot more out there," MacMartin said.

"I still see those books on the shelves, I still see them online to be able to be checked out, to be reserved and you go to a library and it's waiting for you," she added.

Miscommunication between librarians caused the mishandling of the complaint, according to Marcee Challener, the manager of materials and circulation services.

Once the Magic Attic books have been returned to the library, the pages with the adult entertainment phone numbers will be removed, Challener said.

There are 20 Magic Attic books at the New Tampa library. But the series is out of print.

Meanwhile, all that Ariana MacMartin, an avid reader, wanted from the book club were some stickers or a poster.
