TAMPA - Stefan Sanderling is spreading his musical wings.
The Florida Orchestra's chief conductor has signed on as music director of the Chautauqua Symphony Orchestra, founded in 1929 as part of the Chautauqua Institution, a nonprofit education and cultural center on 750 acres in southwestern New York. For nine weeks each summer, the institution holds an acclaimed festival of the arts.
"It's just a great place to be in the summer," Sanderling said Monday from his home in St. Petersburg. "It's not only music, it's art and religion and philosophy. It's incredibly interesting."
The Chautauqua Institution opened in 1874 as a camp for Sunday school teachers. It gradually grew in size and scope as a center for enlightenment and renewal. More than 150,000 people attend its summer cultural offerings, with symphony concerts held in a massive 5,500-seat hall.
In addition to his posts as music director in Florida and New York, Sanderling is principal conductor of the Toledo Symphony in Ohio. He also stays busy as a guest conductor. Holding simultaneous directorships only enhances the reputation of the orchestra here at home, said Michael Pastreich, president of The Florida Orchestra.
