ST. PETERSBURG - High school football fans in the Bay area will get a little appetizer of playoff football tonight when a three-way tiebreaker will be held at Northeast High to determine the runner-up in Class 4A-District 9.
Players, coaches and fans of Plant High will be particularly interested in the outcome as the winner of the tiebreaker will travel to face the defending Class 4A state champion in the regional quarterfinals Nov. 16.
Bradenton Southeast (3-6, 3-2), Lakewood (5-4, 3-2) and Northeast (6-3, 3-2) each finished in a tie for second place in 4A-9. Boca Ciega won the district title.
The tiebreaker consists of one standard 12-minute quarter. Admission is $6.
Northeast is the top seed in the tiebreaker as a result of having the best record of the three. The Vikings will face the winner of Lakewood-Southeast in the tiebreaker's second quarter. Should Northeast win its quarter against the Lakewood-Southeast winner, the Vikings will receive the district runner-up slot.
If Northeast loses that quarter, the team defeating the Vikings will receive the district runner-up position.
Tonight's tiebreaker at Northeast is one of five in Class 4A, including one featuring host Auburndale, Eagle Lake Lake Region and Groveland South Lake. There are 16 tiebreakers being held around the state tonight, although none are in Class 5A or 2A.
Lakewood and Southeast played Friday night in Bradenton, with Southeast scoring late to secure a 23-20 win. Had Lakewood defeated Southeast, the Spartans would have captured the district runner-up slot.
Lakewood beat Northeast 24-21 in overtime Oct. 26.
