TAMPA - If Sunday's exhibition game is any indication, the University of South Florida women's basketball team has a long way to go if it hopes to make a fifth consecutive postseason appearance.
Hindered by careless ball-handling and poor shooting, USF fell to the Miami Sun 65-63 at The Corral.
The Bulls had two chances in the final seconds to send it to overtime, but both attempts from close range were off the mark.
The Bulls committed 27 turnovers and shot 27.7 percent from the field (18-for-65). Nearly half of their shots came from beyond the 3-point arc, and they made just eight of 31 attempts.
"Our perimeter players have to make shots," USF coach Jose Fernandez said. "It's concerning when you shoot that poorly from the floor."
The Bulls were led by newcomers Jazmine Sepulveda (13 points) and Gianna Messina (11 points).
USF, which forced 28 turnovers, used 11 players, with each scoring at least one point.
"Basically, what we wanted to do was play everybody the same amount of minutes," Fernandez said. "We're still trying to find a good rotation for our team right now. I think we have a very talented team. We've got a lot of pieces; it's just putting those pieces together. That's the big thing."
USF hosts Bethune-Cookman in its season opener on Nov. 13.
