PLANT CITY - A 13-month-old boy remained hospitalized today in Tampa after nearly drowning in his grandparents' pool Sunday afternoon, police said.
The condition of Luis Serrano was not immediately available, but the boy appeared to be improving, police Capt. Darrell Wilson said.
Paramedics were called to the house at 4106 Kipling Ave. about 5:05 p.m. Sunday after receiving a call that Serrano's mother found him floating face down in the pool, Plant City Fire Rescue Operations Chief Eugene Shuler said
A sliding glass door leading to the pool was accidentally left open, Wilson said. No one knows how long the boy was in the water.
The names of the grandparents were unavailable. Wilson said he wasn't sure where the victim lived.
Paramedics performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation on the boy, who was taken to South Florida Baptist Hospital in Plant City, where his treatment continued, Shuler said.
The boy was taken by helicopter later to St. Joseph's Children's Hospital of Tampa, where he was admitted into the pediatric intensive care unit, Shuler said.
