USF Provost Renu Khator today was officially named the next president of the University of Houston system.

Although the appointment was expected, the University of Houston's Board of Regents couldn't officially name Khator president until this morning, though its members had unanimously picked her as their sole finalist at a meeting last month.
The confirmation opens the door to Khator's replacement at the University of South Florida. USF President Judy Genshaft is expected to identify her choice for interim provost on Wednesday, university spokesman Ken Gullette said.
Khator, 52, has been USF's No. 2 executive since 2003, when she was named interim provost. Genshaft gave her the job permanently the next year.
Khator, whom Houston regents called an academic "superstar," has been recruited heavily by universities ever since. Headhunters had called upon her to lead such institutions as the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, Temple University in Philadelphia and Mississippi State University, among others.
She is married to Suresh Khator, a USF engineering professor. The couple has two daughters.
