CLEARWATER - Two southbound lanes of U.S. 19, between State Road 580 and Drew Street, may be closed until 5 p.m., Clearwater authorities say.
Only one southbound lane is open.
Authorities say the problem is due to a disabled dump truck in the highway. The truck's metal frame collapsed due to the weight of concrete blocks it was carrying, and debris scattered into the roadway, Clearwater public safety spokeswoman Elizabeth Daly-Watts said.
At least six cars sustained damage, including flat tires, but there were no injuries.
The lanes closed are the two farthest to the right, so their closure means drivers won't be able to drive from U.S. 19 onto Drew Street or Gulf-to-Bay Boulevard, Daly-Watts said.
Southbound traffic continues in the lane to the left, but it is slower than usual because the other two lanes are closed, she said. McMullen-Booth Road has been recommended as an alternative route.
