Hillsborough School Board Suspends Teacher Accused Of Sex With Student

TAMPA - The Hillsborough County School Board on Tuesday suspended without pay Christina Butler, a Middleton High School teacher accused of having a sexual relationship with a 16-year-old male student.

Tampa police charged her Oct. 23 with felony lewd and lascivious battery. Letters of intent to sue the district have been filed on behalf of both the student described as having a sexual relationship with Butler and another student suspended after telling school administrators she suspected the relationship.

Butler is a first-year teacher and may not be re-appointed to teach, school district spokesman Steve Hegarty said.

As a first-year teacher, Butler doesn't have the tenure or the same rights as experienced teachers, Hegarty said. In effect, he said, she would be terminated. He also said Butler's status can be resolved if her case goes to trial fairly quickly.

Also suspended without pay was Stanley Telfare, a custodian at Blake High School charged with first-degree murder. He was arrested after the Oct. 11 beating of his girlfriend, Elalia Walker, a night-school secretary at Blake.

She died Oct. 18. Telfare had worked at Blake since January 2006.
