TAMPA – With injuries depleting the University of South Florida receiving corps, freshman Carlton Mitchell has seized the opportunity to impress QB Matt Grothe.
"He knows he needed to step up," Grothe said, "and he's done a good job."
Grothe doesn't have trouble finding the 6-foot-4 Mitchell on pass patterns.
"He's a big, lanky guy," Grothe said. "[I] just look for the streak of green running across the field."
Mitchell, who also runs track and holds the USF record in the 400 meters with a time of 47.28, is second on the team with 22 catches for a team-high 390 yards and two TDs.
JENKINS MAKES CUT: USF senior CB Mike Jenkins is among 12 semifinalists for the Jim Thorpe Award, given annually to college football's top defensive back. The three finalists will be named on Nov. 19.
Meanwhile, sophomore DE George Selvie, who leads the nation in sacks (13.5) and tackles for loss (27.5), was not among the four finalists announced Tuesday for the Lombardi Award, given to college football's best lineman.
JUCO PAIR COMMITS: USF received commitments from two Pearl River (Miss.) Community College teammates, according to scout.com. LB Kion Wilson, a four-star recruit, and WR/DB Theo Wilson are both listed as Top 50 JUCO recruits.
