20 Acres Selected For Elementary School

LAND O' LAKES - The Pasco County School District has found land in Zephyrhills where it hopes to build an elementary school that is part of the district's five-year construction plan.

The school board is expected to vote today on a contract to buy 20 acres for $900,000, or $45,000 an acre.

The property, owned by Richard J. Kinney, is on Otis Allen Road west of Old Lakeland Highway.

The school district looked at other sites in the area, but decided they were priced too high, were on substandard roads or were in the flood plain, according to a memorandum to the school board.

The elementary school is scheduled to open in August 2011 with a capacity for 762 students.

It likely would draw its students from areas now served by Centennial, Woodland and West Zephyrhills elementaries.

Those three schools have a combined enrollment of more than 2,500 students, but a combined capacity of slightly less than 2,000.

As is standard is land-purchase contracts, the school district gets riparian, oil, gas and mineral rights. In this case, though, the district doesn't get all pine-tree rights.

Kinney has planted and cultivated pine trees on the property according to the proposed contract. He can harvest those trees until the day of the closing.
