GO FISHING is a daily look at the area fishing scene through the eyes of local charter boat captains and fishing guides. Today: Randy Rochelle.
Looks like Mother Nature is still doing her part to help revive the fish stocks.
The rest of the week looks like it will be a bit on the breezy side with winds around 15 knots. Mix breezy conditions with high pressure and you can bet offshore fishing will be tough.
Kingfish are showing up at all of their regular hangouts, although I don't believe the big schools have arrived. Look for the bite to continue to improve the next couple weeks.
Spanish mackerel have arrived in huge numbers. Just pop out to one of the artificial reefs or hard-bottom areas along the beaches and you will find all you want. I watched several boats anchored up in front of the Blind Pass pulling in one after the other. The majority were in the 2- to 4-pound class with a couple of 5- to 6-pounders mixed in.
Once again the bay is the place to go for grouper. Vance Tice and crew managed 30 fish in four hours of trolling. Only a handful were keepers, but considering the amount of gas money and time you'll save, it is sure beats running offshore at this time.
Got another report saying that cobia are starting to show up in good numbers in the same areas as the kings. Keep a rod rigged and ready in case one comes swimming up.
