NEW PORT RICHEY - Democrat Kim Bogart has announced plans to run against Pasco County Sheriff Bob White.
Bogart, 55, executive director of the Florida Corrections Accreditation Commission, formally filed paperwork Monday with the county Supervisor of Elections Office. The election will be in November 2008.
"I've got three areas where I think I can make a difference: crime rate; management and leadership; and fiscal responsibility and accounting," said Bogart, who has lived in Pasco for 22 years. "I don't believe the agency's resources are being directed to addressing our crime problem, and we have a very serious crime problem here.
"I think there's an apparent leadership problem, especially when deputies feel so strongly that they post billboards expressing that feeling."
Bogart worked at the sheriff's office from 1985 to 2000, when he left as a captain after White was elected. Since then, Bogart has worked for the state Accreditation Commission, while also working as a part-time deputy with the St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office and for Matrix Consulting Group, which does public service and public safety work.
Bogart earned a bachelor's degree in business administration from Saint Leo College in 1996; in 2003, he earned a master's degree in that field from the renamed Saint Leo University.
"By the end of this elections cycle I will show that I have the right amount of experience and knowledge and I'm just quite a bit more qualified," Bogart said.
