SARASOTA COUNTY - Sheriff's detectives said Wednesday a Wachovia Bank customer in Venice found a device on an ATM machine late last month that electronically copies personal account information.
The ATM "Skimming" device was found on Oct. 28 at the Wachovia Bank located at 4205 S. Tamiami Trail. Authorities say thieves use the device to capture account information and ATM pass codes from the magnetic strip on the back of bank cards.
Once they have the information, they can buy things online, create fake debit cards or withdraw cash.
It is unclear how many customers were affected or how long the device was on the machine. Authorities say customers should be aware of protruding ATM pads, loosing fitting face plates or suspicous people at the bank after hours.
