Good Action On The Flats

Fly anglers fishing with me on the Snook Fin-Addict, out of CB's Saltwater Outfitters on Siesta Key, had good action the past few days on the flats of Sarasota Bay and Gasparilla Sound in Charlotte Harbor. Snook are staging along sand bars in both areas, and reds are scattered on the flats and have been feeding. Action in the coastal Gulf off Siesta and Lido keys has also been hot.

An angler fishing Sarasota Bay with me on Monday caught six or seven Spanish mackerel in about an hour on Ultra Hair Clouser flies on an intermediate fly line at the Lido Reef. We moved into Sarasota Bay later in the morning, and we caught and released several trout on Clouser flies near the Coker Reef and a 24-inch red on my Flats Minnow fly near Long Bar. Another trip in the coastal Gulf off Siesta Key produced seven or eight Spanish mackerel and a 32-inch cobia on flies.

Captain Bruce Burkhart of CB's Saltwater Outfitters had good action with Spanish and king mackerel and bonito trolling spoons and plugs off Lido and Siesta keys this week. Captain Jim Klopfer, also of CB's Saltwater Outfitters, reported good action with catch-and-release trout, bluefish, jacks, ladyfish and a 3-pound pompano on live shrimp at Stephens Point in Sarasota Bay.

An angler fishing Gasparilla Sound in Charlotte Harbor with me recently scored a pair of reds and several trout on my Flats Minnow fly. The reds were caught by sight-casting to fish were cruising sand bars or along mangrove shorelines.
Fall weather is finally here and the bite is on. I look for this type of action to continue all month.
