TAMPA - The people have spoken.
And the city's Architectural Review Commission agrees with them.
By a 5-2 vote late Wednesday, the commission recommended denying the rezoning of Hyde Park Village to allow for two mixed-use condominium and retail towers.
The commission said the project would be out of character with the historic neighborhood.
"This is outsized," Commissioner Keith Roberts said.
As with two prior meetings, commissioners heard from neighbors protesting the project.
"Many good changes have been made; a lot of good things have happened," Hyde Park resident Steve Hudoba said. "Our concern continues to be about the mass of the project."
The village had scaled back the plans to include a 90-foot-tall building with a grocery store, on Swann Avenue between Rome and Dakota avenues, and an 80-foot-building at Rome, Snow and Dakota avenues. The buildings would have 163 residences.
Richard Seges, vice president of development for village owner Wasserman Realty Capital, said he thought the project would revitalize the 10-acre outdoor mall.
He said the plans will be presented to the Tampa City Council at 6 p.m. Dec. 13 at city hall, 315 E. Kennedy Blvd. The council can accept or reject the commission's recommendation.
"We're disappointed that they apparently liked the merits of some of the plans but not all of it," Seges said.
