SAN ANTONIO - District 1 County Commissioner Ted Schrader is seeking a third term, and a longtime supporter has filed paperwork to oppose him in next year's Republican primary.
John Nicolette, a Tampa firefighter who was among the hopefuls to replace former state Rep. Ken Littlefield when he was named to the Public Service Commission, said he has a "burning desire" to serve Pasco County and represent the people's interests.
If elected, Nicolette, 45, of Darby, said he would focus on lowering property tax bills, controlling traffic and protecting quality of life.
"My definition of lowering taxes is not just reducing the millage rate," he said.
Nicolette also is the son-in-law of retiring County Attorney Robert Sumner.
Schrader, first elected in 2000, said he was surprised that Nicolette, whom he appointed to a rural ordinance committee, was running.
Schrader said he would like to see several projects to fruition, including the Clinton Avenue Extension and the Pasadena Hills area plan. Schrader has prided himself as a leader in lowering the tax rate and in the consolidation of volunteer and professional fire departments.
