Kentucky Shocked On Home Court

Published: November 8, 2007

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Billy Gillispie's second game at Kentucky turned out to be the first shocker of the college basketball season.

Gardner-Webb beat the No. 20 Wildcats 84-68 Wednesday night in the 2K Sports College Hoops Classic.

The Wildcats hadn't lost a regular-season game to a mid-major since falling to Western Kentucky on Nov. 15, 2001, in that season's opener. They lost to Alabama-Birmingham in 2004 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

Kentucky's last home loss to an unranked nonconference foe was Dec. 3, 2005, against North Carolina.

The tournament had been set up to send four top programs - No. 3 Memphis, Connecticut, Oklahoma and Kentucky to New York next week to play in the semifinals.

However, instead of the Wildcats, Gardner-Webb, which finished 9-21 last season and tied for seventh in the Atlantic Sun Conference, will play the winner of tonight's game between Buffalo and Connecticut.

UCONN 69, MORGAN ST 65: Jerome Dyson scored 20 points to lead Connecticut to a closer-than-expected 69-65 win over Morgan State in the first round of the 2K Sports College Hoops Classic at Storrs, Conn.

UConn will play Buffalo in the second round tonight. Greg Gamble scored 25 points Wednesday as the Bulls beat Ohio Valley, 89-82 in the other first-round game at Storrs.

Shooting Guard Commits To Seminoles

TALLAHASSEE - Shooting guard Deividas Dulkys has verbally committed to Florida State, the Noles' third commitment of the 2008 recruiting class.

The 6-foot-4 Dulkys averaged 15.2 points and 5.1 rebounds last season at Findlay Prep in Henderson, Nev.

The NCAA's early signing period begins Nov. 14. FSU also has received verbal commitments from Clearwater guard Luke Loucks and Dothan (Ala.) forward Xavier Gibson.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Cierra Bravard, a 6-foot-5 center from Perkins High in Sandusky, Ohio, has verbally committed to play at FSU.

According to HoopGurlz.com, Bravard is rated as the No. 7 women's basketball prospect in the country.
