TAMPA – Hillsborough County deputies say they have finished their search for a reported gunman near a Tampa elementary school. They say they did not find anyone.
The Hillsborough County school district had four schools on modified lockdown as a precaution while deputies investigated the report of a man dressed in camouflage and possibly carrying a rifle, officials said. The lockout was lifted following the search.
School district spokeswoman Linda Cobbe said the schools affected were Lowry Elementary, Westchase Elementary, Davidsen Middle and Alonso High.\
Two students reported seeing the man in the woods on the other side of the fence outside Lowry about 8 a.m. The district put the other schools on modified lockdown because they are nearby.
A modified lockdown involves controlled access in and out of the school building and no students unaccompanied on the grounds, Cobbe said.
At least a dozen sheriff's units responded, including a helicopter and K-9 units.
"Bear in mind, it is hunting season," Cobbe said.
Lowry Elementary is at 11505 Country Hollow Drive in the Westchase area.
