A Boca Ciega High School student was left standing in his underwear today after two men hit him in the head with a handgun and robbed him of his clothes, cell phone and money, Gulfport police say.
A Gulfport police officer interrupted the armed robbery at about 9:30 this morning. Officer Zach Mills saw two young men take off when they spotted his patrol car, and he called for backup. While looking for the suspects, officers found the robbery victim on the Pinellas Trail.
The victim was given clothing and taken back to school. Boca Ciega High, Hamilton Disston School and Gulfport Elementary were placed on lockdown while a search for the armed suspects continued.
A few minutes later, a woman in the 5300 block of Ninth Avenue South reported she saw the men running through her neighborhood. The woman told police one of the men pointed a gun at her.
An officer thought he spotted one of the suspects in the 5300 block of 11th Avenue South, but he managed to escape before a perimeter could be set up. A Pinellas County sheriff's office helicopter helped search several square miles, but the suspects have not been found.
All three of the Pinellas schools have been released from the lockdown.
