TAMPA - A Hillsborough schools committee is proposing moving semester exams to a week after winter break in 2009-10.
The change from completing exams before the holidays would more equalize class time in the first and second semesters, said district spokeswoman Linda Cobbe, since state law now dictates a later school starting date.
The proposal has a long way to go before it would be official or would take effect. The dates are being recommended by a committee of administrators, teachers and parents who met Thursday.
It now goes to Superintendent MaryEllen Elia, who makes a recommendation to the school board for a vote.
School calendars have become more difficult to craft since state law began requiring public school to begin no earlier than two weeks before Labor Day.
The proposed calendar for 2008-09 has classes starting Monday, Aug. 18, and ending June 4, Cobbe said. Semester exams would be before winter break, a change made years ago at the request of students and teachers that they have continued to support.
The proposed calendar for 2009-10 would start classes Monday, Aug. 24, and end them June 9.
