ST. PETERSBURG - A minister's apartment caught fire Thursday moments after he left to take a friend home, St. Petersburg fire officials said.
The Rev. Woodroe Givens received a cell phone call from a neighbor that Givens' upstairs garage apartment at 1511 1/2 19th Ave. S. was ablaze, said Lt. Rick Feinberg of St. Petersburg Fire and Rescue.
Firefighters responded to the 5:12 p.m. fire; they put it out in about 15 minutes and contained it to the second floor, Feinberg said.
No one was injured; the estimated damage was roughly $85,000, Feinberg said.
The fire started in the kitchen. Givens told authorities he had left a pot roast on the stovetop with the heat set at medium. He also mentioned he had just replaced the end of the cord on a toaster and had used the toaster that afternoon. The reason Givens replaced the electrical cord, Feinberg said, was because a small electrical fire involving the toaster broke out during the week.
The cause of the fire, however, remains under investigation.
