POLK CITY - It was all for fun Friday, but today they race at Roar 'N' Soar, a weekend event that features an estimated 30 hot-air balloons.
How do you win a balloon race?
"A balloon goes out and drops targets on the ground, then the other balloons drop targets as close to that as possible and try to return by a certain time," said Michelle Harris, spokeswoman for Fantasy of Flight, the air entertainment park and museum where the event is being held.
The race starts as the sun begins climbing about 6 a.m. When the sun heads down, the balloons will serve as a backdrop for the wedding of eight couples selected from hundreds who entered an Orlando-area radio contest.
For the nuptials, the balloons will glow from within with the flames that help raise them.
Roar 'N' Soar also features other racing machines - on air, land and water - and runs from 6 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. today and Sunday at Fantasy of Flight, near Exit 44 of Interstate 4 between Tampa and Orlando.
Admission is $19.95 for adults.
