PORT RICHEY - With Veterans Day falling this weekend, Lane Glo North in Port Richey has resumed a mission the Lane Glo Bowling Center in Pasco County began last year, and that was to help veterans.
Last fall, the centers sold American flags and held a bowling tournament to raise money for the Bowlers to Veterans Link, a national nonprofit organization that raises money to purchase recreational equipment and therapeutic supplies for American veterans.
The Lane Glo Bowling centers raised $1,500 with their campaign in 2006 and hope to top that this year. Part of the campaign, in addition to the sale of the flags at both Lane Glo Centers, is hosting a bowling tournament today at Lane Glo North in Port Richey.
The tournament is a doubles format. Registration is $50 per team, and the tournament begins at 1 p.m.
The Bowlers to Veterans Link, based in Fairfax, Va., awards grants to various Veterans Administration hospitals, including those locally. For information about the fundraisers held by Lane Glo Bowling centers, call Lane Glo North at (727) 848-2566. THANKSGIVING SPECIALS: Various bowling centers in Pasco County will be holding tournaments and specials in conjunction with the rapidly approaching Thanksgiving weekend.
At Lane Glo North in Port Richey, the center's junior bowlers program will host a tournament open to all bowlers, including adults. The Nov. 17 tournament is a nine-pin, no-tap format. Among the prizes bowlers can win are turkeys for their Thanksgiving dinners.
Also, the week of Nov. 18, Lane Glo North will be accepting donations that the center will provide to the local Salvation Army to help homeless and needy citizens.
At Pin Chasers in Zephyrhills, the center will hold eight-pin, no-tap tournaments on Sunday and Nov. 17. In each frame, if a bowler's first ball is a strike, they will win a prize.
The tournament both days is $12 per person, with two shifts each day at 5 and 7 p.m. For information, call (813) 782-5511.
At Hudson Bowl on Nov. 18, the center will host the first of two Thanksgiving tournaments. For this doubles tournament, which is scheduled for 2:30 p.m., teams must consist of a man and a woman or two women. Registration is $15 per team.
On Thanksgiving morning, Nov. 22 at 9:30 a.m., the center will host a scratch/match tournament open to the first 26 bowlers. Each bowler will have his or her own lane. Cost to enter is $50, and 100 percent of the registration fees will be paid out in prize money.
The first nine games will be head-to-head bowling, with the 10th game being a position round. For information, call Hudson Bowl at (727) 863-5481.
