Schrader Elementary honored veterans Friday with speeches and a flag retirement ceremony.
Schools throughout Pasco County met with veterans, sang songs and waved their flags as other groups readied for a parade, memorial services, wreath placements, dinners, dances and other observances.
In Zephyrhills, the city will honor its veterans with a parade that winds through downtown today. It begins at 10 a.m. at 17th Street and Fifth Avenue and ends at Raymond B. Stewart Middle School, 38505 10th Ave.
At 11 a.m., veterans and spectators are invited to gather at Times Square on Fifth Avenue and Eighth Street for a ceremony featuring live music. The veteran and volunteer of the year will be honored.
Vendors will set up on Fifth Avenue in advance of the day's final festivities, Music & Motorcycles, which starts with registration for a full throttle, multiple class, ride-in bike show at 4 p.m.
Judging begins at 6 p.m., with trophies and cash on the line.
Here are other Pasco events:
• Father Felix Ullrich Assembly 1565 of the Knights of Columbus will conduct a memorial service and wreath placement at 11 a.m. Sunday at the veterans memorial on the south side of Sims Park in downtown New Port Richey.
• American Legion Paradise Post 79 will host a Navy Junior ROTC unit and drill team, plus the Bag Pipes on Sunday at the post's New Port Richey home, 5329 Legion Place at Veterans Way. After an early bird dinner at 2 p.m., there will be music from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. Dinner tickets are available in the post's lounge. Call (727) 842-8387.
• At the newly opened Grove at Wesley Chapel, Veterans Day festivities Sunday will include free American flags for shoppers, music and refreshments. The Grove is just north of County Road 54 on Oakley Boulevard.
• After an 11 a.m. ceremony Sunday, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10167, at 4619 Bartelt Road in Holiday, will have an indoor picnic at noon and a dinner dance at 4 p.m. Sunday. Donation is $7. Call (727) 938-5977.
• In Veterans Village, VFW Chester McKay Post 7987 will have a brief ceremony at 11 a.m. Sunday at the post home, 7445 Chester McKay Drive and Seven Springs Boulevard. Hamburgers, hot dogs and side dishes will be served afterward. A $3 donation is requested. Draft beer will cost 50 cents. Call (727) 376-3502.
• The Polish American Social Club of Pasco County, 7615 New Jersey Ave., Hudson, will have a "salute to veterans" dinner dance, to include an honor guard, at 12:45 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $11 for members, $12 for nonmembers.
• A ceremony at 1 p.m. Sunday at VFW Post 7845, 6315 Stone Road, Port Richey, will feature speeches by retired U.S. Rep. Mike Bilirakis and state Sen. Mike Fasano. Afterward, join a party with food, entertainment, beer and fountain drinks for $5. Call (727) 847-6277.
•AmVets Post 16, 9638 State Road 52, Hudson, will have a pig roast Sunday, with country music by Roger Danes starting at noon. Call (727) 868-7391.
• The Polish American Pulaski Association will have dinner (1:30 p.m.) and dancing (3 p.m.) today at the clubhouse, 4616 Darlington Road, Holiday. Music is by Northern Sounds. Tickets are $11 for members, $13 for guests. Call (727) 785-6296 for reservations.
• Veterans will eat free from 4:30 to 9 p.m. Monday at Golden Corral on Gall Boulevard in Zephyrhills. (Family and friends must pay.) Veterans using a cane, walker or scooter will be brought to the front of the line.
