LAWRENCE, Kan. - Sherron Collins scored 22 points and fueled a 17-2 run early in the second half and No. 4 Kansas swamped Louisiana-Monroe 107-78 on Friday night to win its 35th consecutive home opener.
The Jayhawks (1-0) waltzed to a 47-35 halftime lead and then quickly turned it into a romp when the Warhawks' two top scorers, Tony Hooper and Lance Brasher, went to the bench with four fouls.
TENNESSEE 80, TEMPLE 63: JuJuan Smith scored 15 points and Ramar Smith added 14 and No. 7 Tennessee opened the season with a victory over Temple.
JuJuan Smith was 5-for-9 from the field for Tennessee.
DUKE 121, N.C. CENTRAL 56: Taylor King scored 20 points while fellow rookie Kyle Singler added 15 to lead Duke past North Carolina Central, the Blue Devils' eighth straight season-opening victory.
Nolan Smith, a third freshman, added 16 points for the Blue Devils.
TEXAS A&M 73, McNEESE STATE 50: Freshman DeAndre Jordan scored 12 points and Josh Carter had 14 to lead the 16th-ranked Aggies to victory over McNeese State for their eighth straight win in a home opener.
ARKANSAS 67, WOFFORD 45: Patrick Beverley found his shooting touch in the second half, making two 3-pointers that helped No. 19 Arkansas pull away for victory over Wofford in John Pelphrey's first game as Razorbacks coach.
PITTSBURGH 103, HOUSTON BAPTIST 62: Sam Young and DeJuan Blair overwhelmed former NAIA power Houston Baptist from the start with a quick and decisive burst of fast-break dunking and rebounding and No. 22 Pittsburgh cruised to a season-opening victory.
KANSAS STATE 94, SACRAMENTO STATE 63: Freshman Michael Beasley had 32 points and a Big 12 Conference-record 24 rebounds in his first game at Kansas State, leading the 25th-ranked Wildcats over Sacramento State.
Monroe Leads Seminoles To Victory In Opener
Jacinta Monroe scored 23 points and No. 19 Florida State spoiled Florida Gulf Coast's Division I debut, as the Seminoles beat the Eagles 93-53.
Tanae Davis-Cain added 18 points for the Seminoles (1-0), who led 46-24 at the half. Delia De La Torre led Florida Gulf Coast (0-1) with 14 points.
FLORIDA 82, XAVIER 71: Senior Depree Bowden and sophomore Brittaney Thomas scored 17 points each for the Gators in their season opener.
MARYLAND 76, PRINCETON 52: Kristi Toliver had 16 points and 10 assists, Jade Perry added 12 points and 10 rebounds, and No. 4 Maryland never trailed in defeating Princeton in the Preseason WNIT.
LSU 86, SAMFORD 38: Quianna Chaney scored a game-high 25 points and Allison Hightower added 17, leading No. 5 LSU to an easy victory over Samford in the opening round of the WNIT.
STANFORD 100, YALE 44: Jayne Appel scored 20 points to help No. 7 Stanford rout Yale, handing the Bulldogs their worst loss in school history.
NORTH CAROLINA 103, N.C. CENTRAL 32: Rashanda McCants scored a career-high 17 points and No. 8 North Carolina set a school record for largest margin of victory in beating North Carolina Central.
TEXAS A&M 62, SMU 57: Takia Sparks scored 17 points and Ashlaa Horton added 15 rebounds as No. 11 Texas A&M rallied to beat SMU.
GEORGIA 81, RICHMOND 53: Ashley Houts scored 17 points and No. 9 Georgia used a big run starting the second half to win its season opener over Richmond.
GEORGE WASHINGTON 79, MARYLAND-BC 59: Kimberly Beck scored 20 points to surpass 1,000 for her career, Antelia Parrish added 17 points and eight rebounds, and No. 14 George Washington opened with a victory over Maryland-Baltimore County.
MICHIGAN STATE 65, IUPUI 35: Allyssa DeHaan scored 18 points and had seven blocked shots to help No. 17 Michigan State beat IUPUI 65-35 on Friday night in Suzy Merchant's Spartan coaching debut.
VANDERBILT 92, UAB: Liz Sherwood and Jessica Mooney each scored 13 points to lead No. 17 Vanderbilt to victory over Alabama-Birmingham.
WEST VIRGINIA 76, CANISIUS 49: LaQuita Owens scored 21 points and Yinka Sanni added 16, leading No. 18 West Virginia to a win over Canisius.
PITTSBURGH 85, CHARLOTTE 68: Marcedes Walker dominated in the lane and scored 16 points, and Xenia Stewart also had 16 as No. 20 Pittsburgh pulled away in the second half for a win over Charlotte in the WBCA Classic.
NOTRE DAME 98, MIAMI (Ohio) 50: Lindsay Schrader scored 20 points and Ashley Barlow added 19 to lead 24th-ranked Notre Dame to victory in the opening round of the Preseason WNIT.
