ENGLEWOOD, Colo. - The Denver Broncos released veteran defensive lineman Simeon Rice before the end of practice Friday.
The 33-year-old Rice signed a one-year, $3 million contract Sept. 3. He was released by Tampa Bay after failing a club physical and refusing to restructure his contract July 26, the day he reported to training camp.
Rice chose Denver over St. Louis in part because of the opportunity to get more playing time after starter Ebenezer Ekuban sustained a season-ending Achilles' injury in training camp.
"Under the current situation we felt like we were better with the younger players that we do have," Coach Mike Shanahan said. "They give us the best chance to win and that's the direction we are going."
Rice could not be reached for comment Friday.
BILLS: Starting receiver Josh Reed and defensive end Aaron Schobel both missed practice Friday and are questionable for Buffalo's game at Miami on Sunday.
Reed missed his first practice of the week after developing stiffness in his back. Schobel missed Thursday's practice because of a groin/thigh injury, but was sent home Friday after becoming ill.
BROWNS: Guard Seth McKinney will not play against Pittsburgh and guard Eric Steinbach was listed as questionable Friday, the first shake-up on a line that has led the way for Cleveland's surprising turnaround on offense.
CHARGERS: Cornerback Quentin Jammer will miss Sunday night's home game against the Indianapolis Colts because of a hamstring injury, meaning Antonio Cromartie (Florida State) will make his first pro start.
COLTS: Defensive tackle Raheem Brock and cornerback Marlin Jackson returned to practice Friday after sitting out the two previous days with injuries. Brock hurt his neck, while Jackson was out with a foot injury. Both starters are listed as questionable.
DOLPHINS: Middle linebacker Zach Thomas will sit out Sunday against Buffalo because of migraines, the fourth game he has missed since a concussion in September.
GIANTS: Receiver Plaxico Burress did not practice Friday and was listed as questionable for Sunday's game against Dallas. Burress has not taken part in practice for most of the season while he contends with a nagging right ankle injury he sustained in training camp.
Running back Derrick Ward also did not practice Friday and was listed as doubtful with ankle and groin injuries.
The Giants announced they had extended fullback Madison Hedgecock's contract through the 2012 season.
PANTHERS: It's come to this for the Panthers: Undrafted rookie Matt Moore, with the team since September, could start Sunday against the Falcons if Vinny Testaverde's Achilles' tendon doesn't improve.
Testaverde had practiced two straight days, but was held out of Friday's workout because he again felt pain in his right Achilles' tendon and was listed as questionable.
REDSKINS: Receivers Santana Moss and Antwaan Randle El were unable to practice again Friday. Moss is sidelined with a bruised heel and is listed as questionable on the injury report. Randle El has had a relapse of a nagging hamstring injury and is listed as probable.
TITANS: Defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth will be a game-time decision Sunday after missing his third consecutive practice Friday with a right hamstring injury.
VIKINGS: Once again, Minnesota will delay naming its starting quarterback until Sunday's pregame warm-ups.
Tarvaris Jackson, who was knocked out last week with a concussion, is listed as questionable for the game at Green Bay. Brooks Bollinger will start if Jackson doesn't.
