BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Kevin Smith carried 41 times for 320 yards and four touchdowns to lead Central Florida (7-3, 5-3 Conference USA) to a 45-31 victory against UAB (2-8, 1-5) on Saturday night.

Smith, a junior from Miami, shattered his previous career high of 223 yards, set earlier this season against Louisiana-Lafayette. He had scoring runs of 2, 3, 8 and 41 yards and set a single-game school rushing record.

Smith broke UCF's single-season rushing record with a 20-yard run in the first quarter. His 1,768 yards surpass the 1,511 by Marquette Smith in 1995.

UCF won its fourth game in a row. The Golden Knights claimed sole possession of first place in the East Division with the help of Marshall's 26-7 victory against East Carolina.

BETHUNE-COOKMAN 37, HOWARD 26: Bethune-Cookman ran through, around and over host Howard, rushing for all 420 yards of its total offense.

Jimmie Russell led Bethune-Cookman (4-6, 2-5 MEAC) with three touchdowns and 141 yards on 15 carries. Phillip Kirkland added 124 yards and Justin Brannon had 85 yards and a touchdown.

Russell opened the Wildcats' scoring in the first quarter when he dropped back to pass, then tucked the ball and ran for a 15-yard TD.
Ronnie McCullough (Hillsborough High) led Bethune-Cookman's defense with 15 tackles - four for a loss - and three sacks.

HAMPTON 30, FLORIDA A&M 15: Jeremy Gilchrist scored on two punt returns to lead host Hampton (6-4, 5-3 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) past Florida A&M (3-7, 2-5).

The Pirates trailed 3-0 most of the first quarter before Gilchrist's 86-yard punt return with 2:14 left in the first.

Wesley Taylor (Riverview High) kicked a 25-yard field goal for the Rattlers early in the second to put Florida A&M within 7-6. Ernie Lomax scored on a 1-yard pass from T.J. Mitchell, Gilchrist had a 57-yard punt return and Carlo Turavani kicked a 43-yard field goal to put Hampton up 23-6 at the half.

FLORIDA ATLANTIC 34, ARKANSAS STATE 31: Willie Rose caught two TD passes and also a 2-point conversion pass as host Florida Atlantic (5-4, 4-1 Sun Belt) came from behind to beat Arkansas State (4-6, 2-4).

Trailing 31-20, a screen pass from quarterback Rusty Smith to Rose went 56 yards for a TD to close the gap to 31-26 with 9:57 left in the fourth.

The Owls took the lead on Smith's 6-yard TD pass from Smith to DiIvory Edgecomb with 2:49 left. Smith tossed a pass to Rose for a successful 2-point conversion.

JACKSONVILLE 24, BUTLER 16: Chris Horton passed for 206 yards and two TDs to lead host Jacksonville (3-7, 2-5 Pioneer) past Butler (4-7, 0-7).

Horton's total moved him into second place on the Dolphins' career passing yardage list with 4,445 yards. He needs 423 yards in next week's season finale against Wagner to surpass Mike Sturgill as the school's all-time leader.
