SARASOTA COUNTY - A man was critically injured Saturday evening after his Jeep slammed into a parked car near Pike Avenue and Wilkinson Road.
The crash happened shortly before 5:30 p.m.
According to witnesses, the Jeep was going east on Wilkinson Road.
It jumped a ditch, clipped several trees and landed on top of a parked Ford Mustang.
The identity of the driver was not immediately known. The Florida Highway Patrol described the driver as a white male in his 30s. He was flown to Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg.
Charmaine Engelsman-Robins, 58, was inside her home when she heard the Jeep crash into her car.
She found the unconscious driver, who had fallen out of the vehicle and landed in her car's back seat.
"I thought the roof was falling off my house," Engelsman-Robins said of the crash.
"It was the Jeep falling off my car. He was backwards in my back seat. He had a bad head injury, and blood was everywhere."
The same Jeep may have been involved in a hit-and-run about a mile away at the Sweetbay Supermarket near Bee Ridge and McIntosh roads, witnesses said.
Engelsman-Robins said she found a cooler with several empty beer cans among the debris from the Jeep.
It is unclear if alcohol played a role in the crash, which is still under investigation.
