THE PROMISES Church member Ruth McGinnis lent the Whites $170,000 in 1995 to help them buy a home. They never paid her back or cared for her as promised. LaShonda Dupree didn't get a home she believed she won in a church-sponsored essay contest in 2002. The Whites repaid McGinnis and bought Dupree a home after their stories ran in the Tribune.
THE DIVORCE
The Whites announced in August that they would end their 18-year marriage. The news shocked the congregation. Randy now leads Without Walls, and Paula bought a home in San Antonio, Texas. She continues to work as a televangelist and life coach.
THE INQUIRY
Last week, U.S. Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, asked for financial information from the Whites and the leaders of five other multimillion-dollar, independent ministries. He wants the Whites to explain how the church spends its donations and whether the money is used for their homes, cars, personal travel and cosmetic surgeries.
THE FUTURE
Randy said he has rededicated himself to running Without Walls and has suspended plans to open a ministry in Malibu, Calif. "I don't know at this point where God will lead me or call me," he said. "I do know that my heart has always been for the indigent, that no matter where I am in life, it will be helping the poor and needy."
