TAMPA - Aggressive hitting and few errors led Berkeley Prep to victory against an experienced Fort Pierce John Carroll team, 25-22, 25-15, 25-14, in a Class 3A regional final Saturday.
Berkeley Prep struck the ball confidently throughout the match, and Coach Randy Dagostino struggled to find negatives in his team's performance.
The Buccaneers' "Big 3" - Lindsay Young, Alex Dickerson and Chelsea Parker - combined for 28 kills. Eleven kills were added by Mackenzie Dagostino and Danielle Michiels, the only senior on the Bucs' roster.
"We clicked today," Randy Dagostino said. "We had so few hitting errors with big hits at the ball. We attacked the ball well and had a lot of contributions from a lot of people, and the Big 3 did what they do game in and game out."
Trailing 19-15 in Game 1, the Rams pounced on the Buccaneers after a timeout and tied the game at 19 on an Allison Riley ace. Lindsay Falkenberg later brought the Rams to within a point, 22-21, with a kill from a wide angle.
Parker then responded with a kill to give the Buccaneers a 23-21 lead, and Young had two kills in the final three points to close out the game. The game-winner was set by Becca Howard.
Bucs captain Christina Theofilos had a strong Game 2, as the Rams struggled with her variety of short and long serves. Theofilos led the Bucs with 18 digs.
In Game 3, Falkenberg had a kill to tie the score at 3, before the Buccaneers rattled off six consecutive points.
