BRANDON - It went quick but not painlessly for Brandon as Winter Park Lake Howell put an end to the Eagles' season on Saturday in a Class 5A region final, 25-15, 25-14, 25-10.
The Silver Hawks (28-2) had little trouble being the road underdog. In fact, coach and player alike were taken aback at how easily they beat the Eagles, earning Lake Howell its third straight trip to the state tournament.
"I was really surprised," Silver Hawks coach Teresa Kruczek said. "I really thought they would have played better, especially at home."
Brandon (21-4) had won its previous 10 matches.
After the match, Eagles coach Amy Watson was visibly distraught, left searching for answers as to why Brandon's postseason had come to such a short and bitter end.
"I'm absolutely blown away," Watson said. "It was the worst match of the year, and the biggest match of the year.
"Everything looked good at practice, we were prepared - we just came out flat."
As cold as the Eagles were, the exact opposite can be said for their opponent. The Hawks were challenged early in the first two games, but came charging back each time with multiple runs, including reeling off eight points in a row near the end of Game 2.
"We just dwelled on our mistakes," said Eagles sophomore outside hitter Alexandra Woodlee (12 kills). "We were touching balls that were out, and we weren't playing balls that were in.
"I think we were a little intimidated."
